What is an Articulator? An articulator is a mechanical hinged device used in dentistry to which plaster casts of the maxillary and mandibular jaw are fixed, reproducing some or all the movements of the mandible concerning the maxilla. It assists in fabricating the biting surfaces of removable prosthodontic appliances (dentures), fixed prosthodontic restorations (implants, crowns, bridges, inlays, and onlays), and orthodontic appliances. It ensures correct interdigitation of the teeth and an anatomically functional biting plane. This means fewer occlusal adjustments before and after fitting dental appliances and fewer chronic conflicts between the teeth and the jaw joints. Read more
Disposable articulators can be used for a variety of cases and offer several efficiencies over reusable articulators. Usually made of plastic, these articulators are an affordable option while allowing clinicians and technicians to capture proper bite and jaw movements. These articulators should be designed to easily place the model with a secure connection to the articulator for accurate restoration design and fabrication. Having a disposable articulator system on hand can be helpful when a lab is so busy that all of the other articulators are in use or when articulated models need to be shared with clinical partners.
